Supreme makes waves with their 25th Anniversary drop

Supreme New York opened their shop on Lafayette St. to the public in April of 1994, making this past week the 25th Anniversary of the brand. Starting off as a skateshop for local kids, the brand has since evolved to become a global pinnacle of streetwear and hip hop culture. Now with eleven shops on three different continents, Supreme has millions of consumers eagerly waiting for Thursday every week to buy their latest releases.

To celebrate their 25th Anniversary, Supreme collaborated with Austrian crystal brand, Swarovski, releasing box logo tee shirts and hoodies. There have been rumors of this collaboration since the beginning of this season with leaked photos of the hoodie, building hype for the drop before Supreme even officially announced it. On Tuesday morning, the Instagram post all streetwear enthusiasts had been anticipating finally appeared in our feeds, confirming our suspicions.

Supreme’s news page provided the information that the tee shirt would feature 1,161 hand-applied crystals making up the logo and the sweatshirt with 1,201. As soon as I heard the crystals had been added by hand in New York, I knew the release was going to be extremely limited, meaning resale prices were going to be even higher. After EU’s online release on Thursday, I checked Supreme Community’s sell-out time list to discover every size and color of the two pieces had sold out in under 13 seconds. This was rather discouraging considering I always purchase manually and my fastest manual checkout is around 15 seconds. That did not stop me from trying; however, I was unable to successfully purchase either of the items. After reaching the ‘processing payment’ page, the loading bar made it around halfway across before I received the message that the shirt had sold out.

With the exception of the Louis Vuitton collaboration, these box logos were some of the most expensive to release, with retails of $398 and $598. I decided to go after the less expensive tee because I felt it was too risky to put up almost six hundred dollars of capital for a hoodie. Nevertheless, they both are selling on StockX for over a thousand dollars, with the hoodies reaching towards two grand. Those who purchased were either able to post a picture on social media flexing their newest cop or get around a 200% return on their investment. For those who are unable to purchase off the initial release, Supreme often does restocks on the same day of the release. Although bots typically snap these up within seconds, if you are quick enough, you might have a second chance at buying something that was previously sold out.
