When luxury meets streetwear

Recently, on October 5th an MCM capsule, full of leather goods and sportswear accessories, was released exclusively on Nordstrom. The capsule was released online, alongside in store pop-ups in select Nordstrom stores. Ranging from $50-$3,000, you can browse these MCM items online, including water bottles, handbags, hoodies, hats, boxing gloves, and even a golf club bag. Days after the original release you can still purchase a majority of the items, however, some of the more popular items, such as the boxing gloves or shoulder bag, sold out shortly after the drop.

Luxury brand MCM is typically known for their fine leather products or faux leather prints, but for this release, they collaborated with different companies to produce odd accessories, specifically playing cards, a sleeping mask, a blanket, and a basketball. Considering MCM is a luxury leather brand, it is strange how they have branched off into other territories, including streetwear. Nonetheless, this is actually the case for many luxury brands who have stepped into the streetwear scene. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Channel now have “high-end” sneakers and even skateboard decks. The integration of streetwear and luxury is relatively new, however, it is dominating the game. Hypebeasts care not about prices, and are willing to pay excessive amounts of cash to grab accessories and shoes with high-end fashion logos on them.

I love buying and wearing streetwear, but when it comes to luxury brands, I find it rather senseless to spend $800 for retail on a pair of shoes just because they feature a fancy logo. Also, when luxury brands do collaborations, they simply apply their name to another company’s product, adding a few hundred dollars to the price, without even adding a luxury aspect such as using real leather. For quite some time now I have wanted to buy a pair of luxury slides, yet all of the pairs I have looked at are made of rubber and pleather. If I’m dropping that kind of money on something, I at least want it to be of high quality. Balenciaga Triple S sneakers are now being sourced to China, yet still feature the $900 price tag. Of course these items look dope and add heat to your closet, but when you take the time to think about it, is it really worth your money to buy a luxury product that isn’t so luxurious after all?
